The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department pronounced both teenagers dead at the accident scene. Emergency responders closed the road during the investigation. Witnesses claim that the accident involved alcohol, but police officers did not confirm that statement. The accident remained under investigation at the time of the news report.
A Speeding Accident is Deadly for Everyone
Speeding accidents are deadly for drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. As the vehicle’s speed increases, the chance of life-threatening and debilitating conditions increases in an accident. If a person survives a crash at a high rate of speed, the person may sustain permanent disabilities such as loss of limbs, paralysis, and brain damage.
Common injuries in a speeding accident include:
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Internal organ damage
- Broken bones and fractures
- Amputations
- Neck and back injuries
Victims of an accident might require ongoing medical care and personal care. Their quality of life might severely decline because of their injuries and impairments. Mental trauma, emotional distress, and physical pain can cause significant suffering. Additionally, victims incur substantial financial losses, including loss of income and medical bills.
Causes of Accidents Involving High Speeds
Alcohol impairment and drug impairment are common causes of high-speed accidents. The alcohol or drugs impair the driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle and the driver’s judgment. Another common cause of high-speed accidents is distractions. A distracted driver may not pay enough attention to the speed of the vehicle. The combination of distraction and speed can be deadly.
When a driver causes a speeding accident, the driver is liable for the damages caused by the accident. Passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and other motorists can sue the driver for damages including:
- Past and future medical expenses and bills
- Past and future loss of wages, salaries, benefits, and other income
- Permanent impairments and disabilities
- Physical pain and suffering
- Mental trauma and emotional distress
- Scarring and disfigurement
