Folsom apartment complex staircase collapse could lead to wrongful death suit
A 27-year-old Folsom man died Saturday when a section of stairs fell on top of him after it collapsed. Initial reports indicated that the wrongful death accident could have been caused by dry rot in the apartment building. The accident occurred at 2:40 p.m. at The Legends at Willow Creek Apartments in Folsom.
Two men were walking down the staircase when the lower section of the stairs gave way and sent one man to the ground where the set of stairs then fell on top of him killing him instantly. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has been withheld.
Building engineers are investigating the scene including all of the remaining staircases at the apartments. The same apartment building had another staircase collapse last year which prompted the repairs for all staircases at the location. Residents at the apartment building have been concerned about the safety of all the staircases ever since.
A friend of the victim who had been walking down the stairs first just made it off the stairs alive. The building owners have hired engineers to survey the condition of all staircases and make repair recommendations. Someone on the scene reported that 12 staircases had been repaired but there were 10 more waiting to be fixed.
