Last month, Alexis Landeros, was crossing Marconi Avenue when she was struck and killed in a pedestrian accident, according to a report by The Sacramento Bee. A driver traveling in the eastbound slow lane struck the teenager as she crossed the street in Arden Arcade near Ashbourne Drive. The driver of the Jeep Wrangler tried to swerve to miss the young woman but was unable to do so. Landeros was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a driver in the eastbound fast lane slowed when the driver saw Landeros. However, the driver of the Jeep Wrangler kept going because that driver believed the young woman was going to stop and wait for traffic to clear before proceeding. Tragically, her mother witnessed the accident from the opposite side of the road where she was waiting for her daughter.
Another Tragic Pedestrian Accident
Pedestrian accidents are on the rise throughout the United States. The reasons some sources give for the rise in pedestrian accidents include:
- More people walking for health and economic reasons
- Heavier traffic in neighborhoods and other roads where pedestrians frequently use
- Distracted driving, speeding, and aggressive driving
- Drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs
- Fatigued, sleeping, or drowsy driving
- Pedestrians who are distracted while walking
Whatever the reason for the rise in pedestrian accidents, one fact remains the same — a pedestrian accident changes the lives of the pedestrian and the driver forever.
A driver involved in a pedestrian accident is often haunted by the event to the point where some drivers are unable to get back behind the wheel of a vehicle. The pedestrian often suffers life-long medical conditions due to the crash that greatly impacts his or her quality of life and impacts the lives of the entire family. What can you do to avoid becoming a victim of a pedestrian accident?
Safety Tips for Pedestrians and Drivers
Both drivers and pedestrians must take steps to avoid accidents that injure pedestrians. Drivers should always remain alert. Slow down when approaching areas where pedestrian traffic may be heavier such as neighborhoods, schools, parks, and commercial areas. Always watch for pedestrians at intersections, crosswalks, and parking lots. Never slow down and “wave” a pedestrian to cross a multi-lane road because other drivers may not see the pedestrian.
Pedestrians must also exercise caution to avoid pedestrian accidents. When crossing a road, look all ways and remain alert for oncoming traffic. Make eye contact with a driver to ensure the driver sees you before crossing. Remain alert and cross at crosswalks and intersections whenever possible. When jogging or walking, wear brightly colored clothing to increase your visibility.
