For drivers who travel along one of the oldest mountain highways in California, the safety upgrades planned for Highway 50 by Caltrans will be a welcome addition. The Sacramento Bee reported on the $50 million safety upgrade in a story published on December 13, 2016. The project includes several key elements designed to protect drivers using this section of Highway 50.
One addition will be a concrete median divider between Apple Hill and Placerville. The divider will make it safer for drivers passing close to each other at high speeds along the winding mountain road. In addition to the divider, the project includes building an under crossing; installing deceleration and acceleration lanes; and, widening of the outside shoulders.
Decreasing Motor Vehicle Accidents
There are many ways government officials try to decrease motor vehicle accidents. One way is through education. For example, educating the public on the dangers of distracted driving and impaired driving are ways the NHTSA tries to decrease the number of car accidents. Increased enforcement is another way to decrease motor vehicle accidents by forcing drivers to think before they violate traffic rules.
Of course, another way is improving the designs of roads or adding safety features, as in the case of the Caltrans improvements along Highway 50. While most motor vehicle accidents are the result of driver error, some accidents are caused by other factors. For example, an accident can be the result of a defective car part or debris on the roadway. Another reason for car accidents is poorly designed roads.
When an accident is the result of a defective product or poorly designed roads, a third party may be liable for damages. Therefore, it is very important that each accident is thoroughly investigated to determine the exact cause of the collision. You can only recover compensation for damages from the party responsible for the collision. Furthermore, if a third party is responsible for the conditions that led to the accident, there could be additional insurance policies or resources available for the payment of damages.
