A long-awaited section of Sacramento freeway that has been under construction for five years opened last week according to a report by The Sacramento Bee. A new 10-mile segment of Interstate 80 from the Yolo County line to Watt Avenue now has a carpool lane on the westbound side. The opening of the carpool lane is part of the $136 million freeway widening project. Crews will continue to work on the eastbound carpool lane that is expected to be finished later this month.
The improvements were scheduled to be completed in 2014, but several setbacks delayed the project’s completion. The Sacramento Bee reports that officials say the project will ease traffic on one of the area’s busiest freeways. As anyone who lives in or around the Sacramento area knows, this section of freeway is very busy with frequent car accidents. Only time will tell whether the new improvements will ease traffic and reduce accidents.
Freeway Accidents
Freeway accidents are common in the Sacramento area. Traffic, speed, distractions, and impaired drivers are just some of the reasons why freeway accidents occur. Unfortunately, freeway accidents can result in fatalities and traumatic injuries, in part due to the high rate of speed vehicles travel when on the freeway. When you have an accident that results in traumatic injuries, the damages tend to be substantial. In some cases, the damages could reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
For example, if you have a freeway accident that results in a spinal cord injury, you may be partially or completely paralyzed. Your medical expenses will be quite substantial. Furthermore, you will have ongoing medical and personal care expenses because of the permanent disability.
In addition, you may be unable to return to work because of your injury. Therefore, you could have millions of dollars in lost wages, depending on your age and occupation. As a result, your damages for lost income and medical expenses alone could reach into the millions of dollars. This figure does not include damages for other injuries such as mental anguish, physical pain, property damage, and emotional stress.
Even if your freeway accident does not result in a traumatic injury, you may still suffer thousands of dollars in damages when you add all your losses together. Insurance companies are not in business to pay large settlement claims. Insurance companies want to pay you as little as possible to settle your claim. They have teams of professionals working to protect their best interest. You need a legal team working for you to protect your rights and your best interests.
