Texting Driver Veers off Roadway Killing Sacramento Bicyclist and Seriously Injuring His Son
Mustafa Rafi and his son were riding their bikes in a designated bike lane in Sacramento when Desman Carrino, distracted by his cell phone, ran them over. It was reported that Rafi admitted to looking at a text message on his phone right before hitting the bicycling accident victims on a Sacramento street.
The bicycle accident occurred around 10am on Edision Avenue in Sacramento. Rafi died shortly after being rushed to the hospital and his son is in critical condition. They were riding their bikes in a bike lane near their home.
A friend of Rafi, Mohammad Karim, was first on the scene said that he put his hand under Rafi’s head trying to help but noticed lots of blood and broken bones throughout his body. The neighbor was very upset after seeing the bicycle accident victim laying there seriously injured. Karim stated that the accident scene brought back memories of how both men had come to America to escape Afghan violence.
Rafi had worked with the U.S. in Afghanistan as an Army translator for many years and had just recently relocated to their new home in Sacramento. A friend of Rafi also stated the him and his son came to America to start a new life far away from the violence in their home country.
The Sacramento Police have yet to file charges against the driver of the car as their bicycle accident investigation continues.
