Good Samaritan Killed in Car Accident While Helping driver on Sacramento Freeway
A good samaritan was killed today after stopping to help a stranded motorist on a Sacramento freeway. The California Highway Patrol stated that despite your good intentions under no circumstances never stop in the middle of the freeway.
The deadly car accident happened on I-80, near the Norwood Ave offramp, not far from Highway 99. Accident investigators reported that around 2:30a.m. a Good Samaritan was assisting another driver who had ran out of gas and stopped in the fast lane of the Sacramento freeway.
The Good Samaritan, driving a Mercury Cougar, had returned to the scene with the driver of the disabled car shortly after getting gas to fill up the stalled car. After getting back into his car the good samaritan was rear ended by another driver in a Prius who did not see the stopped vehicle in the fast lane of the freeway. The resulting car accident impact was so bad that it caused the Cougar to burst into flames. The driver of the Prius attempted to rescue the good samaritan but he could not get him out of the burning car.
A Sacramento CHP officer said that whenever you have a car traveling at highway speeds hits another car standing still you are going to have a very serious car accident. He went on to say that you should never stop in the middle of the freeway in any lane. Always move to the shoulder and call 911 while remaining in your vehicle.
The Good Samaritan’s poor decision to stop his car ended up costing him his own life. The Sacramento CHP car accident investigators on the scene warned other drivers to never put yourself in danger by doing something like this. Always get help from highway emergency crews.
The name of the Good Samaritan was not released pending family notification. The Prius driver has been only identified as an off duty law enforcement officer that was driving home from work.
