Sacramento Car Accident Kills 61-Year-Old Railyard Worker
A Sacramento car accident took the life of an area man on Sunday. Gary Edwin Lappin was driving to work at the Union Pacific Railyard in Roseville when he was hit by a car driven by 17-year-old Sergiy Stepanova. Stepanova was driving his 2003 Lincoln in excess of 100 MPH at the time of the accident, and had four passengers in the car ranging from 16 to 20 years old.
The 61-year-old Lappin was due to retire next year after working for more than ten years at the railyard testing and maintaining train cars. “We’re all just kind of in shock,” said the victim’s daughter, Shannon Lappin, 37, of Ukiah.
The California Highway Patrol is considering charges against Stepanova, who came away from the fatal accident with only minor injuries. His passengers were treated at a local hospital for broken bones, lacerations, brain injuries and broken facial bones.
