CBS SF Bay Area reported on an accident that had shut down all lanes of Interstate 80 last week. According to the California Highway Patrol, all lanes were closed while the accident was investigated and cleared. The collision occurred on the eastbound side of Interstate 80 around 1:00 p.m. in Oakland just east of the Interstate-580 connector. CHP was allowing traffic to pass on the shoulder, but advised drivers to use an alternate route by taking West Grand Avenue to San Pablo Avenue and making a left onto Ashby Avenue. At the time of the report, the status of the accident victims was unknown.
Other accidents blocked traffic and created problems for motorists that day around the Bay Area. A tractor-trailer jack-knifed in the westbound lanes of Interstate 580 in Castro Valley just west of Eden Canyon Road blocking the right lane. Another accident blocked traffic on the northbound side of Interstate 680 in Pleasanton just south of Stoneridge Drive.
Safety Tips for Driving on Alameda County Interstates
When you are driving on the interstates, highways or freeways in Alameda County or Bay Area, you need to take extra care to avoid accidents. The high number of vehicles traveling at high rates of speed can increase your risk of being involved in a traffic accident. Therefore, you need to keep the following safety suggestions in mind:
- Be Mindful of Your Speed — It is extremely tempting to travel faster than the posted speed limit on the interstate, especially when other drivers are exceeding the speed limit. You need to be cautious to maintain a safe speed. Remember, when you are driving in poor weather or heavy traffic, the safe speed may be less than the posted speed limit.
- Drive in the Right Lane — The left lane is usually considered the passing lane. If you are not overtaking traffic, driving in the right lane may be safer.
- Maintain a Safe Distance — Tailgating or following too closely can increase your risk of a traffic accident. Make sure that you decrease your speed even more if you are following a motorcycle because they can stop quicker than other vehicles.
- Be an Alert and Well-Rested Driver — Distracted driving is a growing problem on all roads. When you are on the interstate, you may have a second or two to react to avoid a collision. You need to remain alert at all times. Also, drowsy or fatigued drivers do not respond as quickly to situations. Make sure you get enough sleep and rest, especially before driving long distances.
