Folsom residents rally to make a deadly intersection safer after middle school student dies in bike vs car accident
An 11-year-old Folsom boy, Calvin Suh, was hit and killed by a car while riding his bike on Monday. His death has sparked a neighborhood rally requesting the city of Folsom to investigate how they can make the dangerous intersection safer for pedestrians and bicycle riders.
The intersection currently has not stop signs, traffic lights or crosswalk in an area where many residents say drivers regularly drive much faster then the posted 45mph speed limit. Neighborhood residents reported that the design of the intersection is most likely a major factor in the tragic lose of the young boy. One resident said that the intersection is so dangerous that she often drives her daughter just to cross the street where the car accident occurred.
The Folsom police department is currently investigating the auto/bike accident and have ruled out DUI as a contributing factor. The driver of the car, which has not been cited, has been cooperating fully with the accident investigation.
Immediately following the accident neighbors took action by collecting signatures requesting a traffic safety improvement and submitting the proposal to Folsom city officials. Folsom city officials have ordered a landscaping survey to see how the median landscaping can be changed to improve visibility at the deadly intersection. They have also requested a comprehensive traffic survey to investigate the current traffic patterns. City officials will review these reports and request any recommended intersection improvements to be approved by the Folsom city council and the Traffic Safety Council.
