Animal Control Sweep Conducted After Fatal California Dog Attack
Last month, 65-year-old Emilio Rios was found dead in the front yard of his home as the result of a dog attack from two unattended pit bulls. Another woman in Rios’ neighborhood was also attacked by the dogs, but escaped with minor injuries after the dogs were scared away by the sirens of police officers who had been called to the scene after the initial attack.Recently, Riverside County animal control officers captured 29 dogs in a sweep of Rios’ former neighborhood looking for stray and potentially-dangerous dogs. “What we had happen earlier this month was just a horrific event,’’ said a spokesman for the Department. We really needed to show that community that we care.’’ Unless claimed by their owners, those dogs captured in the sweep will be put up for adoption, assuming they have temperaments that makes them safe to be in the community again.
California Dog Bite & Dog Attack Lawsuits
Although dogs are treasured members of many area families and great additions to all our local communities, rare and unfortunate incidents like the one which occurred last month display that these animals can also occasionally pose a risk to citizens in their everyday lives. When the unfortunate incident of a California dog bite or dog attack occurs, the consequences can be grave: puncture wounds, scarring, bites requiring surgery, bites resulting in amputation, rabies shots, injuries from being knocked down, and even loss of life. Those injured in a Sacramento CA dog attack may have legal recourse. Under California law, the owners of a dog which harms another person are liable for the financial damages the bite or attack causes. This is the case even if the owner has no knowledge or reason to believe the dog is aggressive or dangerous. Therefore unlike other states, this makes proving liability straight-forward in this type of cases in California. However, the reality of bringing any personal injury lawsuit contains significant hurdles, including fighting with the insurance companies to receive the financial compensation that you deserve.
