On this blog, it is rare that we get the opportunity to report on good news relating to personal injury cases in and around Sacramento CA. However, the return of Omar Rafi to his home after a three-month hospital stay following a catastrophic accident is one such piece of positive news.
The 10-year-old Rafi was seriously injured after he and his father were hit while riding their bikes close to their apartment building on Edison Avenue in Sacramento. The crash happened when a car driven by a 25-year-old Sacramento resident veered off the road and into the bike lane, apparently as a result of the driver looking down to check a text message on his phone.
Tragically, Rafi’s 33-year-old father was killed in the accident. The boy was rushed to the hospital where he spent two months in an induced coma and another month learning how to walk again. Now, the boy has returned home. “In the beginning all I hoped is at he’d open his eyes and say ‘Mom,’” his mother Mulalai said. According to his family, Rafi is back playing with friends and other kids in the neighborhood.
The 10-year-old boy still walks with a limp, and a piece of his skull is still missing; he has to have to wear a protective helmet until surgeons can operate again in a few months. Additionally, him and his family are still dealing with the aftermath of the accident. “I’m grateful my son is home but it would’ve been much better if my husband could be here with us” Mulalai said. For our part, we are glad the young boy has been returned to his family, and hope it is the start of a long but successful recovery period for all of those involved.
