Causes of Head-on Collisions
Most people assume that head-on collisions are only the result of two vehicles traveling in opposite directions colliding bumper to bumper. However, head-on collisions can also result when a vehicle strikes a stationary object such as a wall, light pole, or building. The causes of head-on collisions vary and include:
- Tire blowouts
- Driving while impaired by alcohol and/or drugs
- Poor judgment when passing another vehicle
- Making a wide turn in a blind curve
- Speeding
- Turning into oncoming traffic
- Poor weather conditions
- Trying to avoid road debris
- Altered traffic patterns and road construction
Regardless of the reasons for head-on collisions, the results from these collisions are the same — people are tragically and fatally injured. It is important to always be focused on the task of driving and drive defensively to avoid head-on collisions if possible.
What Types of Injuries Are Common In Head-on Collisions?
As discussed above, head-on collisions often result in the death of one or more people. Car accident victims suffer a variety of injuries. The severity of these injuries depends on many factors including the type of collision. Head-on collisions result in devastating injuries including:
- Loss of limbs
- Paralysis
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Broken bones and/or fractures
- Head injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Burns
- Whiplash
