Consumer groups in Sacramento report that CarMax is selling cars with known product recalls
The Auto Reliability and Safety Foundation and the California Public Interest Research Group has requested that the California Attorney General and DMV look into CarMax’s policies that could mis-lead consumers into buying used cars with recalls that have not been repaired. Some of these defective product recalls include dangerous airbags, defective ignition switches and defective fuel tanks that could catch on fire in an auto accident in Sacramento and throughout California. These groups want this practice to end immediately.
Auto Safety researchers checked vehicles on CarMax lots in various California cities and found almost 11% of the cars in one Southern California CarMax location had defective product recalls that were not repaired. Another location in Sacramento, California was found to have auto product recalls in almost 10 percent of it’s inventory. These product defect recalls also had not been repaired.
Vehicle safety groups report that CarMax often sells vehicles with unrepaired recalls even though they tell customers that each car they sell goes through comprehensive quality checks. Some of these recalls and safety defects could include dangerous airbags, vehicle stalling and deadly fires in car crashes.
National laws forbid car dealers to sell new vehicles the have any safety defects but this does not apply to used autos. California consumer organizations want the state to look into CarMax’s policies and procedures that label cars as certified but still have product safety issues.
