The 25-year old who ran over pedestrians in New Orleans who were attending a Mardi Gras parade had a BAC of almost three times the legal limit. He injured 28 people in the DUI accident. Unfortunately, these news stories are all too common. Drunk driving continues to be a serious problem throughout the United States. Many companies, schools, and government agencies have developed various PSAs and campaigns aimed at educating young drivers about the dangers of drunk driving. However, one program is taking their efforts one step further by putting teens in a drunk suit to teach them about the dangers of drunk driving.
The Drunk Suit
Jeff Rossen of the Today Show demonstrated how effective the drunk suit is in showing teen drivers how alcohol impairs their ability to operate a vehicle. In a recent story, Rossen wore the drunk suit and beer goggles while he performed a field sobriety test and drove through a test course. Before putting on the suit and goggles, Rossen drove the course perfectly. However, once he put on the drunk suit and beer goggles, the results were dramatically different.
The suit and goggles mimic what it is like to drive while impaired by alcohol. Rossen failed each test miserably. A student who takes part in these exercises gets to “feel” how drinking impairs bodily functions. As Rossen pointed out, he failed the test while having a clear head and could not imagine what it would be like trying to drive while actually intoxicated.
Ford Driving Skills for Life
The experts at Ford Driving Skills for Life developed the drunk suit to use as part of its campaign to teach teen drivers to be safe, responsible drivers. Established in 2003, the Ford Driving Skills for Life Academy was a partnership between Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association, and a panel of safety experts. It provides resources and training for parents, teachers, and teens. Even though the hands-on driving lessons with the drunk suit are not available in all areas, the information online is available to everyone.
Drunk Driving Accidents
Even though you teach your teen drivers to never get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol, that does not mean that all drivers will refrain from impaired driving. Drunk driving accidents continue to injure and kill thousands each year. Someone must be held accountable for the damages caused by a DUI accident.
If you or a family member has been injured in a DUI accident, you may be entitled to receive compensation for your damages. Damages in a drunk driving accident may include medical bills, lost wages, property damage, permanent disability, funeral expenses, pain, and suffering. Your first step in recovering compensation should be contacting a Sacramento DUI accident attorney.
