66-year-old Margaret Bengs was struck on her bicycle this month on Fair Oaks Boulevard about 100 feet south of Kenneth Avenue. She died at Mercy San Juan Hospital two days after the accident. Bengs was a speechwriter for former Gov. George Deukmejian and former Attorney General Dan Lungren, and she was an op-ed contributor to the Sacramento Bee.
According to police, the vehicle that hit Bengs was a 2014 Toyota Tundra driven by Matthew Gary, a Sacramento Superior Court judge. Although California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Jenna Berry would not comment on Gary’s involvement in the crash, she said that “everything” suggests Bengs may be responsible for the accident.
However, Bengs’ family is not so sure. “We have just been getting over the grief,” said Chris Bengs, Margaret’s brother. “We are just getting to the point where we are starting to ask questions.”
For its part, CHP is continuing to investigate this fatal California bicycle accident. “The occupations of those involved in this or any collision have no bearing on the investigation,” Berry said. “The CHP investigates all collisions in the most thorough way possible to determine the cause of each collision and to represent each party fairly and impartially.”
