Schools are out and the days are longer and that means more bicyclists of all ages will be on the road. California also has the most cities ranked in the top 20 for bike commuting. All of this adds up to the need for extra vigilance both for drivers and bikers. Below are some common causes of bicycle accidents and how to avoid them.
Distraction
Drivers take their eyes off the road to answer a phone call, adjust the radio or GPS, eat, reach for falling items, and many other reasons. Drivers and bikers need to be aware of their surroundings and anticipate the actions of others on the road. Hitting a bicyclist by opening a car door is a classic example of an accident that can occur because of being distracted.
Not Obeying the Laws
Driving over the speed limit, failing to use turn signals or hand signals (if you’re the biker), and knowing who has the right of way at intersections are a few examples of not following laws designed to protect everyone on the road. Be sure you are aware of the proper safety protocols for bikers and always follow them.
Lack of Vigilance Off Road
Many bike/car accidents occur in parking lots, sidewalks, and driveways. Always double-check mirrors and cameras in your car for bikers and expect the unexpected when driving in neighborhoods. Young children can dart out quickly with bikes into the road. Keep your speed down and your eyes constantly scanning for bicyclists and other potential risks.
