Car accidents caused by distracted driving are a serious problem in our state and across the country. Often, we focus on distracted driving education and prevention for young people who seem inseparable from their cell phones and other devices. However, the new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety may surprise you. They found that the age group that takes their eyes off the road for the longest amount of time were drivers ages 55-75.
New Technology = New Distractions
Interestingly, in a separate but related study, AAA found that new infotainment technology being installed in cars for communication (phone and text), entertainment and navigation may actually be increasing the risk of distracted driving. Older drivers in the 55-75 age group were found to take their eyes and attention off the road for as much as 8 seconds longer than younger drivers (ages 21-36). This could be due to younger people being more familiar with the technology or slower reaction times of older people. In addition, the most sophisticated (and in some cases that means complicated) technology is found in luxury, high end vehicles—most of which are purchased by drivers in the older age group.
Two Seconds Too Long
But the takeaway message is the same: at any age, distracted driving results in serious accidents. AAA reports that taking your eyes off the road for even two seconds doubles your chances of a crash.
