West Sacramento is a city located in Yolo County, California, has a population of 48,744 people and covers an area of approximately 22.8 square miles. West Sacramento is separated from the City of Sacramento by the Sacramento River, which is also considered the county line, placing West Sacramento in Yolo County instead of Sacramento County. Although not part of Sacramento County, West Sacramento is considered to be part of the greater Sacramento area.
The first inhabitants of the West Sacramento area were the Patwin Indians who established their homes on the west bank of the Sacramento River and were able to thrive due to the abundant natural resources, until malaria and smallpox epidemics all but decimated their population.
John Schwartz became the first permanent settler in West Sacramento when he built a shack on the west bank of the Sacramento River where he eventually founded a salmon fishery and began raising livestock. The discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1848 created a dramatic influx of people to the West Sacramento area.
While Sacramento and surrounding cities began to urbanize, West Sacramento found that agriculture, especially the fishing potential, was its most lucrative development. Fisherman quickly realized that salmon, sturgeon, catfish, eel, crayfish and clams were abundant in the Sacramento River, and resulted in thriving river settlement that were able to stock fish markets in not only Sacramento but also San Francisco. In addition to the impressive fishing capabilities, the valley offered rich soil able to produce ample crops of corn, melons, cucumbers and sweet potatoes. The dairy industry was also able to make its roots in the West Sacramento area.
West Sacramento was incorporated as a city in 1987 and consists of three communities that were originally three separate towns. West Sacramento is currently the home of the Minor League Baseball team the Sacramento River Cats, who play at Raley Field. The California Highway Patrol Academy and Museum is also located in West Sacramento and there have been recent efforts to relocate the official California Highway Patrol headquarters from Sacramento to West Sacramento.
Other than the agriculture West Sacramento’s economy relies heavily on the transportation industry, with the United States Postal Service and the United Parcel Service (UPS) being the top two employers in the city.
